In Johnson County, Kansas, you find a school district by address, not by city, because a district's lines and a city's limits are two different maps. A listing's city does not settle it: five of the six cities below are divided among two or more districts. These questions cover how the lines work, which districts serve each city, and the tools that give the answer for one address.
Key takeaways
- District and attendance lines in Johnson County go by address, not by city, subdivision or neighborhood name.
- Five of the six cities here have more than one district. Prairie Village is entirely in Shawnee Mission USD 512.
- The Johnson County AIMS School Locator gives the district and the assigned schools for an address anywhere in the county.
- Several districts publish a look-up of their own, which is the place to confirm an assignment.
- Olathe Public Schools plans to set its 2027-28 attendance boundaries by January 2027.
How school district lines work
Does the city tell me the school district?
Usually not. Overland Park has four school districts inside its limits and Olathe has five. Lenexa and Shawnee have three each, and Leawood has two. Of the six cities, only Prairie Village is in a single district.
Is the district the same thing as the assigned school?
No. The district is one answer and the schools assigned within it are another, and both depend on the address. The county locator gives the two separately. In Leawood, for example, the schools assigned to an address can be outside the city.
Does the school district affect the property tax bill?
Yes. The district at an address decides which total mill levy applies, so two homes in one city can be taxed at different rates. Each of Jennifer's area guides lists the 2025 totals by district for its city.
Which districts serve each city
Which school districts serve Overland Park and Leawood?
Overland Park has four. Measured on the Census Bureau's current boundaries, about 61 percent of its land is in Blue Valley USD 229. About 27 percent is in Shawnee Mission USD 512 and about 8 percent in Olathe USD 233. The southwest corner has a small area in Spring Hill USD 230. Leawood has two. Blue Valley takes in about three quarters of its land, and Shawnee Mission serves the northern part.
Which school districts serve Olathe?
Five have territory inside Olathe. Most of the city is in Olathe Public Schools (USD 233). Blue Valley USD 229 has a part on the east side, Spring Hill USD 230 in the south, Gardner Edgerton USD 231 in the southwest and De Soto USD 232 in the northwest. None of those lines follows the city limits.
Which school districts serve Lenexa and Shawnee?
Three each. In Lenexa, the east is mostly Shawnee Mission USD 512, much of the west and south is Olathe Public Schools, and the far west is De Soto USD 232. In Shawnee, the county's tax-unit map puts the larger share of the land, mainly in the west, in De Soto. Shawnee Mission has most of the rest, mainly in the east. The southwest has a small area, under 1 percent of the city, in Olathe Public Schools.
Is all of Prairie Village in one district?
Yes. Shawnee Mission USD 512 covers every address in Prairie Village. The city names nine of the district's schools as serving it. Seven are elementary schools, and there is one middle school and one high school. The school for a home is still assigned by address.
How to look up one address
How do I find the school district by address?
Type the address into the Johnson County AIMS School Locator. It covers every district in the county and returns both the district and the assigned schools. Start there for any Johnson County address, whichever city it is in. The county's Location Services tool also names the district, along with the utilities for the address.
Which districts have a look-up of their own?
Blue Valley has Find My School. Shawnee Mission publishes boundary maps and a school finder. De Soto USD 232 has a school locator, and Olathe Public Schools keeps a boundaries page. For a Spring Hill or Gardner Edgerton address, start with the county locator and then ask the district. In every case, use the district's answer to confirm what the county locator returned.
Are any attendance boundaries changing?
In Olathe Public Schools, yes. The board is scheduled to decide on proposed school closures in October 2026. The district also plans to set attendance boundaries for the 2027-28 school year by January 2027. Its boundaries page carries both. That district has territory in Olathe, Lenexa, Overland Park and Shawnee. For a home in it, check the assignment there before relying on it.
When should I check the district for a home?
Before you write an offer. Run the address through the county locator first, then confirm on the district's own tool. Do it for every home on your list, because the lines are not drawn along subdivision or neighborhood names.
What if the home is outside Johnson County?
For another Kansas address, the Kansas State Department of Education links an address look-up. For a Missouri address, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education publishes district maps. That department notes that county authorities are the source of the official boundaries. The metro has dozens of public school districts, and Jennifer's relocation guide covers both states.
What else should I look up for the same address?
Search the flood zone in FEMA's Flood Map Service Center, and check internet providers on the FCC National Broadband Map. For the purchase as a whole, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's buying a house pages cover the steps of buying and shopping for a mortgage.
Jennifer Fallon works with buyers across the Kansas City metro and holds a license in Kansas and in Missouri. If you have a question about one address, contact Jennifer. Current listings are on the homes for sale page, and each address there can go through the locator.
